This course is designed to provide those interested in gaining an entry point into underground mining. The course introduces you to the recognised Standard 11 and meets health and safety obligations for the mining industry. Additionally, students gain partial completion of a nationally recognised Certificate II in Surface Extraction Operations.

The underground induction teaches how to escape from hazardous situations, which will be lifesaving when help is not readily available. The underground component puts you ahead in hazardous circumstances and will be rewarding when needed the most.

Course Pre-Requisites

Eligible candidates must be 18 years and over.

Classroom Learning

The course program runs for the duration of four days, in which both theory and practical related mining scenario assignments will be utilised.

Course Requirements

This course requires you to bring a laptop so we can put information and notes on disc (48 hours' notice required if you do not have one), ID, comfortable clothing and enclosed shoes.

Assessments

On conclusion of course and as directed by the Mining Inspectorate, students are required to fulfil statements as outlined in the Workplace Assessment Log Book, which is completed under the supervision of a mine site supervisor or designate. Once the Log Book is finalized and returned, students are issued with a duly recognised Standard 11 Underground Mining Induction Card or the unit of competency is added to your existing card.

Language, Literacy and Numeracy

Students who wish to enrol into this course will need to have competent language, literacy and numeracy skills to participate in both theory and practical session.

Mining Induction Units

 

RIICOM201A Communicate in the Workplace RRERR203A Escape from Hazardous Situations*    

*As per the Mining Inspectorate, these units require sign off on a mine site or simulated mine site.

Outcome

Upon completion of the classroom training and Workplace Assessment Log Book, students will have successfully gained their Standard 11 Photo ID Underground Mining Induction card.

(Please note: Students will need to attend a one-day refresher program at a minimum of every 5 years, however most mine sites require this done more frequently).

Certification

This qualification is an Australian Qualification Framework accredited course and Nationally Recognised Training from the Resources and Infrastructure Industry Training Package (2009 version 1).

This qualification is delivered under a partnership agreement with Industry Pathways (NPN:32315).

Medicals

Prior to working on a coal mine, a worker must undergo a medical examination in accordance with the Coal Mine Workers' Health Scheme. The examination includes an assessment of the worker's ability to perform the job.

This medical examination must be performed by a Nominated Medical Adviser (NMA), a doctor nominated by a mine operator to conduct health assessments. A coal mine workers health assessment is valid for up to 5 years.
