Practical (Safety Course)
The practical courses in Sydney are conducted at Rose Bay, Botany Bay and Manly in our training powered vessel with a qualified instructor, covering all the main elements of boat handling, manoeuvring and all aspects of boating safety as outlined by N.S.W Maritime.
After our safety induction to the boat and a demonstration of the pracitcal skills to be assessed, each student must drive the vessel for a minimum of 15 minutes, therefore the practical training runs for 1 - 3 hours depending on how many students are on board.
A risk assessment of the conditions is performed before starting any practical training session. If the conditions on the day are considered to be a risk to the safety of the students (wind, temperature, wave height, etc), the course will be cancelled and students will be informed by the fastest means possible (most likely text message or call). All students will be offered a transfer to another date without any charge.
Students should bring (depending on weather conditions):
- Hat
- Sunglasses
- Raincoats
- Jackets
- Bottle of water
- Food for lunch
Please view this video about preparing your vessel before launching at the boat ramp.
Theory (Boat License Knowledge Training and Test)
The theory training MUST be completed before attending the practical session. To complete the theory training you have two options with Training Aid Australia.
Option 1 ($12): The theory component can be completed either online through NSW Maritime ($12) or in a face to face session at Training Aid Australia’s Sydney CBD office. NSW Maritime online training issues a certificate at the completion of the training which you MUST bring to the practical training session.
By completing option 1, you must take your certificate of completion for online theory, with your certificate of completion for the practical training to a Maritime or RTA Approved Office and complete the computer test (fees apply for the computer test). If you pass the computer test, NSW Maritime will issue your recreational boat license.
Option 2 ($125): Theory training delivered by one of our maritime trainers, at a venue convenient to you, or we can supply a room at our Sydney CBD head office. The face to face theory training is for group bookings only (minimum booking of 6 people for a group) and it take approximately 4 hours. With this option, student will sit the theory test at the end of the face to face session. Students should bring a pen and note pad and wear comfortable clothing. If an invoice is required please contact Training Aid Australia’s head office.
By completing option 2, you can take your certificate of satisfactory completion for both theory and practical training to a Maritime or RTA Approved Office to have a Recreational boat license issued by NSW Maritime (no computer test required.
Certification
